Summary

  • Memory is comfortably profitable: Micron's GAAP gross/operating margins were 86.8%/80.7% in FYQ4 ended September 3, 2026; SK hynix's calendar Q2 gross margin was 83.2% and its reported operating margin 76%. Lasting through-cycle returns remain unproved; Micron's September 30 expectation of margins above prior cycle peaks applies to SCA revenue at floor prices. M4H2
  • As of October 18, 2026, the latest located releases are Micron FYQ4 results (September 30), Samsung consolidated Q3 guidance (October 8), and SK hynix Q2 results (July 29). Samsung's guidance provides no Memory segment result. The next Q3 calls are SK hynix on October 28 at 09:00 KST and Samsung on October 29 at 10:00 KST. M4HISEV
  • On September 30, 2026, Micron reported 26 take-or-pay SCAs covering over 35% of estimated revenue through 2030. Three-quarters of that revenue has a defined pricing framework, a majority of it in floor-and-ceiling bands; the remaining quarter is priced periodically at market. Inference: this transfers some demand risk to Micron's customers. SK hynix's semi-annual filing for June 30 reports no long-term-contract order backlog; reconciliation with its July 29 disclosure of around 10 LTA customers is undisclosed, so protection is not shown to be industry-wide. MDHK6
  • Counterpoint's estimated HBM revenue shares changed from 58%/21%/21% for SK hynix/Samsung/Micron in Q1 2026 to 50%/33%/18% in Q2 (grade C; rounded Q2 total exceeds 100%). Its conventional DRAM estimates put CXMT at 10% in Q2 2026, up from 4% a year earlier. Revenue shares differ from shipment shares and producer HBM revenue mix; they do not establish durable technological leadership. CP
  • Nvidia disclosed $279bn of multi-year supply/capacity commitments, up $160bn, on August 26, 2026; Amazon raised 2026 cash capex from about $200bn to $220bn on July 30, citing memory cost; ASML forecast 75% growth in 2026 memory net system sales on October 14. These measure linked procurement and investment responses, not independent end-user returns. NCAR
  • Micron's September 30, 2026 plan targets ID1 initial wafer output in mid-2027 and ID2 in late-2028; its implied FY27 net capex above roughly $50bn exceeds 1.8× FY26, with most of the increase for construction, most of that targeting late-2028+ cleanrooms. SK hynix's August 7 plan targets M17/Y2 cleanrooms for December 2028/June 2029; its June 29 long-range strategy spans roughly KRW1,100tn, including a fourth Yongin fab by 2033. CXMT's July IPO also funds conventional DRAM projects (reported, unverified). These plans do not establish qualified output or a reversal date. MDHNTOM
  • Micron's FY2026 OCF of $89.675bn exceeded gross PP&E spending of $30.712bn; SK hynix's H1 OCF/PP&E purchases were KRW91.74tn/KRW18.33tn, before its July ADS offering of approximately $26.2bn net. Project-return impairment after price normalisation remains unmeasured. Equity losses are already observed: SK hynix Korean shares closed 56.4% below their June 22 peak on October 16, 2026; its US ADS closed at $136.49, 8.4% below the $149 July offer (Yahoo closes, C). Analysis

Data: Micron, SK hynix, Samsung, HBM revenue shares. Blanks mean unavailable or uncollected; Samsung preliminary guidance is explicitly separated from actuals.

What is earning the money. HBM serves accelerators, conventional DRAM supplies system memory and NAND persistent storage. Shared AI demand meets different manufacturing constraints. Micron's margins establish current profitability; Cloud Memory includes other products. Samsung reports Memory sales but broader DS profits. Neither permits a clean comparison of HBM-only margins. M4

Use operating profit: SK hynix's Q2 net profit of KRW93.9tn exceeded revenue because finance income was KRW65.9tn, including KRW53.2tn of financial-instrument valuation gains. The filing lists Kioxia fair value as a 2024 critical audit matter, rather than a current H1 2026 review matter. Inference: investment valuations add memory-sector exposure beyond operating earnings; the filing does not attribute all Q2 valuation gains to Kioxia. Its estimated HBM mix can fall while HBM shipments grow if conventional-memory prices rise faster; this mathematical possibility does not establish actual shipment dynamics. The HBM estimate remains tentative. HK6

HBM changes the cycle's transmission. Customization and qualification impede substitution. SK hynix links supply to Nvidia's roadmap; Samsung identifies HBM4 sales for Vera Rubin. Micron previously confirmed price/volume agreements for its entire calendar-2026 HBM supply; Samsung said its production-ready HBM4 capacity was sold out. These statements concern planned capacity, not unlimited future supply. Micron's latest update contracts most next-year bits; Samsung confirms next-year agreements without specifying complete coverage. HPMT1MD

Micron files binding volumes, take-or-pay terms and deposit retention rights. Deposits secure capacity and enter financing cash flow, outside operating FCF. MK Its September 30 update reports $32bn of customer financial commitments, mostly deposits; this is not all cash already received. Management expects margins for SCA revenue at floor prices above prior cycle peaks; its approximately $150bn call-date RPO uses committed volumes and minimum pricing for contracts with determined frameworks. The 10-K also warns that compulsory purchases can build customer inventories and that breaches alongside weaker demand can expose excess industry supply. MDMK Our inference: contracts improve liquidity and protect selected margins, but can delay the inventory cycle; enforcement, counterparty credit and recovery remain material.

Samsung's July 30 Q&A describes five finalized major data-center accounts and five further negotiations, five-year rolling terms and required advances. Its envisaged 60–70% coverage of planned DRAM/NAND capacity depends on pending deals closing; it is neither achieved coverage nor a disclosed price floor. This broadens the evidence for customer risk-sharing beyond Micron, without establishing uniform protection across producers. ST

SK hynix's June 30 semi-annual filing says volumes and prices are agreed monthly or quarterly and reports no long-term-contract order backlog. Its July 29 release nevertheless reports around 10 LTA customers. The timing and binding terms are unreconciled; Micron's take-or-pay floors and security cannot be assumed at SK hynix. HK6

Pricing power cuts across products. TrendForce's contract forecast still points upward, while its wafer-economics work says conventional server memory became more attractive than annually priced HBM. Micron likewise says next-year HBM price increases narrow its margin gap with conventional DRAM. HBM is therefore not automatically the industry's highest-margin product at every moment. Annual pricing can initially restrain upside and later defer downside. TPMR

Nvidia's final HBM4 prices and terms are undisclosed. TrendForce's blended ASP forecast includes generation and stack mix, rather than a uniform like-for-like price increase. Its reported consideration of less memory per device shows buyers responding to cost. TH

Micron's September 30 outlook allows for double-digit PC/mobile unit declines despite industry revenue growth and lowers expected server memory-content growth. Samsung's Q2 DX division lost KRW0.8tn, with component costs identified as a pressure. Supplier pricing power can therefore coexist with weaker downstream economics; this does not establish an AI spending collapse. MD

SK hynix's October 16 OCP report describes HBF, rack-level memory pooling and KV-cache reuse through demonstrations and internal simulations. These identify ways to redistribute workload demand across HBM, conventional DRAM and NAND, without quantifying commercial displacement. A fixed HBM-per-accelerator assumption therefore needs mix and efficiency sensitivities; the demonstrations do not establish falling HBM demand. OCP

Micron's September 30 guidance puts FQ1 FY27 revenue at $61.5bn ± $1.5bn and non-GAAP gross margin at about 86.25%, which management expects to be the fiscal-year floor despite slower price increases. It forecasts low-20s% DRAM and mid-20s% NAND bit-shipment growth in calendar 2027–28 while both remain constrained, and cannot identify a return to supply-demand balance. These strengthen the near-term scarcity case as management expectations, rather than verified future outcomes. MR

Reconciling the adjacent notes. Nvidia's commitment increase buys multi-year supply assurance; it should not be booked as memory manufacturers' current revenue or read as wholly HBM. Its margin guidance places some scarcity cost at the accelerator vendor before price increases flow through. Amazon places another portion in buyers' capital budgets. ASML's memory growth and SEMI's DRAM equipment forecast describe the supplier response, including process transitions rather than solely additional wafer starts. NCACSE

Inference: nominal capex can rise without more physical capacity; forward purchases can obscure final demand elasticity. Linked commitments do not independently verify end-user returns.

When supply actually arrives. M15X and Yongin's first phase are the near-term SK hynix additions. Its newly approved Yongin Y2 and Cheongju M17 have later cleanroom dates. Micron's schedule separates Idaho initial wafer output from Taiwan Tongluo meaningful product shipments, Singapore packaging, Japan output supporting node transitions, later Singapore NAND output, and a still later New York start. First wafers require ramping; packaging adds no DRAM wafer capacity. Samsung confirms Pyeongtaek investment but the reviewed disclosures do not establish a precise fab-by-fab qualified-output calendar. H2MD

SK hynix's June 29 long-range strategy extends well past those milestones: roughly KRW600tn at Yongin, with a fourth fab constructed by 2033 before further phased equipment, KRW100tn at Cheongju and KRW400tn in a new Southwestern Cluster. Its separately disclosed P&T7 packaging plan is about KRW19tn, and Yongin Phases 2–6 infrastructure KRW21.6081tn; overlap prevents treating them as additive to the roughly KRW1,100tn strategy. H1 utilisation was 100%. Inference: full utilisation at exceptional margins makes later capacity overshoot worth stress-testing, but these phased intentions are not all committed expenditure. Micron's implied FY27 net capex above roughly $50bn is above about 1.8× FY26's $27.367bn; most of the increase is construction, most of that for late-2028+ cleanrooms, with some equipment pull-forward. HK6M4

China expands the supply frame. Counterpoint estimates CXMT's conventional DRAM revenue share at 10% in Q2 2026, up from 4% a year earlier (C). Tom's Hardware reports its July 27 Shanghai IPO raised CNY57.92bn, including CNY29.5bn allocated to DRAM projects, with no dedicated HBM project in the prospectus (reported, unverified). On October 12, 24/7 Wall St. reported a denser-cell claim presented over October 10–11 and a year-end server-product target; Micron and SK hynix US ADS were each down about 4% intraday. Qualification and commercial shipments remain unverified. Inference: expansion by a fourth supplier is a direct possible route to oversupply in conventional DRAM, the market underlying P2; the big-three calendar misses it. Share gains and reported technical progress alone do not quantify incremental qualified supply or prove oversupply. CPW247

ASML said on October 14 that planned equipment-capacity growth of 30% in 2027 and a further 30% aspiration in 2028 would still fall short of customer demand. Installed-base upgrades also raise customer output. Tool availability and upgrades must therefore accompany fab dates in a supply model; construction dates alone can overstate or understate supply growth. AV

Lam's October 21 outlook adds equipment-supplier corroboration of continued demand and constrained supply. Its SLC sensitivity illustrates why NAND bit demand and wafer-capacity demand can diverge; neither is a new memory contract-price observation. LC

Overlapping capacity ramps, yield improvements and weaker demand could reverse prices without every fab opening together. Investment returns require paid demand for each vintage and disciplined equipment installation. Construction schedules alone establish neither a glut nor its absence. HN

Financing and loss bearers. Micron's current operating cash generation covers gross physical investment before incentives; customer security and public subsidies add protection. SK hynix's H1 OCF was KRW91.7425tn against cash PP&E purchases of KRW18.3288tn, or 5.0×; OCF includes KRW13.9836tn of dividends received, so that ratio is not solely cash from memory sales. Two customers accounted for 13.35% and 13.03% of H1 revenue, versus one at 27.31% a year earlier. It also accessed public equity through the ADS offering. HK6 Samsung's consolidated liquidity and OCF comfortably exceed disclosed cash PP&E spending, although neither is attributable entirely to Memory. Management capex and cash purchases have different recognition bases and must remain separate series. Micron reduced debt from about $14.6bn to $5.2bn over FY26 and intends higher shareholder returns from December 9, 2026, eventually returning 100% of excess cash. Inference: cash can go to shareholders as well as expansion; the policy is not a guarantee against overbuild. M4CITISTMR

Samsung Memory draws on Samsung Electronics' consolidated balance sheet. SK hynix is a listed issuer within SK, with investment holding company SK Square a shareholder. Parent investment income is not additional subsidiary cash; affiliation establishes no blanket creditor guarantee. SQ Our loss-allocation inference: equity absorbs impaired returns first, contracted customers may lose deposits, and lenders retain residual default risk.

Observed shareholder losses already precede any demonstrated project-return impairment. SK hynix Korean shares closed at KRW1,272,000 on October 16, 56.4% below their June 22 peak close. The US ADS closed at $136.49, 31.3% below September 9 and 8.4% below its $149 July offer (Yahoo prices and derived drawdowns, C). Buyers still holding from the offer bear a mark-to-market loss; these are not necessarily realized losses. Different peak dates/trading windows explain why the two peak-to-date percentages are not comparable: over September 9–October 16 the Korean and ADS series fell 31.5% and 31.3%, respectively. No KRW-to-USD conversion or project impairment is inferred. YKHF4

Micron's 129-day DIO, up nine days in FYQ4, has a disclosed explanation: management cites node-end-of-life build-ahead and capitalized incentive compensation and expects DIO to decline. This explains management's view of the increase, rather than independently proving its completeness; subsequent declines are the test. MR

History remains relevant. Micron's reversal from high gross profitability to negative gross margin, and SK hynix's annual operating loss, show that technical leadership does not eliminate fixed-cost exposure. Historical server contract-price falls were fast enough to meet a P2-sized decline within a quarter for some products. LTAs may protect selected revenue while uncontracted conventional memory sets the marginal market price. HBM contracts can dampen or delay the cycle and transfer losses to customers; their floors mean the historical trough should not be assumed to apply uniformly to protected revenue. They cannot by themselves make unwanted capacity economically productive. MHT22MR

Adopted P2 definition. Use the fixed TrendForce DDR5 8GB SO-DIMM contract-price Session Average, in dollars per module, at the final assessment in each calendar month. Define the baseline as the maximum of those observations during calendar 2026. Resolve yes if any later monthly observation published by the relevant register horizon is at or below the threshold in claim 39. Freeze product, currency and contract basis; do not substitute the site's more recent spot table. The adopted rule tests each monthly final assessment; an intramonth dip is outside this observation convention. PX

This fixed-product proxy excludes server DRAM and HBM. As fetched October 18, the latest public contract print is still August 31 ($133, +2.31%); the September 30 print is members-only, so public data lag by about a month. With TrendForce forecasting Q4 conventional DRAM prices up 10–15%, a full-2026 peak above $133, and therefore a threshold above $93.10, is likely but not established for this exact module. The baseline remains unverified. Archive every public refresh; adjudicate discontinuation explicitly. TP The register adopted this definition in vintage 0.2a on October 17, 2026, with probabilities unchanged. PX

This note establishes current profitability and financing capacity, and records dated equity drawdowns, but does not estimate fair equity values or a probability of capital impairment. Such a conclusion requires a dated valuation and a stress case separating protected revenue, market-priced output and committed expansion spending. A fall in this consumer-module proxy alone cannot resolve impairment of contracted HBM capacity. XR

Conflicts and open questions

  • Protected versus cyclical — note versus cross-check: The original note interpreted current margins as scarcity earnings and emphasized normalization, disputes and delivery liability. The cross-check gives greater weight to Micron's expected floor margins above prior cycle peaks and staged equipment spending as defenses against the old cycle. Both views retain enforcement risk; the 10-K's customer-inventory and breach warnings provide a concrete route to a delayed reversal. The evidence establishes management's protection claims, not uniform through-cycle outcomes. MDMK
  • A synchronized supply glut versus continued shortages — weighting differs: The original note emphasized a reversal from overlapping ramps, better yields and customer retrenchment. The cross-check judges near-term scarcity more strongly supported than near-term overbuild, citing staggered equipment installation, ASML bottlenecks and supplier shortage forecasts. Samsung expects tight supply through 2028 and TrendForce forecasts next-year HBM scarcity. Neither view has a qualified-capacity/yield model; shared demand optimism could still fail, while downstream affordability, customer inventory and architecture changes provide specific later-reversal mechanisms. STTHMDXR
  • Market-share disagreement and grading: IDC and Counterpoint differ in claim 27. Neither estimate is audited company revenue; comparisons require consistent periods and denominators. The original note graded these estimates B; the cross-check grades them C under the methodology's estimate rule, adopted here. The final prospectus verifies that SK hynix quoted IDC, not IDC's measurement. HF4XR
  • Investment conclusion — ranking versus measurement: The original Summary called inadequate returns after normalization the “main vulnerability.” The cross-check accepts it as a scenario but finds no valuation or impairment bridge that ranks it against equity valuation risk or measures loss probabilities. The Claude review distinguishes already observed equity drawdowns from still unmeasured project-return impairment, whereas the Codex review left equity valuation unanswered without dated prices. Both positions are retained: claims 59–60 now document shareholder losses; neither drawdown establishes fair value or project impairment. XRYK
  • Contract protection — Codex versus Claude: Codex stresses Micron's floor margins and Samsung's rolling contract program as defenses against the old cycle. Claude finds the industry-wide inference too strong because SK hynix's June 30 filing has no long-term-contract backlog despite its July 29 report of around 10 LTA customers. Both disclosures are A; they may describe different dates or terms, but no reconciliation is disclosed. Protection must be assessed issuer by issuer. XRHK6ST
  • Supply framing — Codex versus Claude: Codex weights staggered ramps and tool bottlenecks toward near-term scarcity. Claude agrees on the near term but gives more weight to SK hynix's roughly KRW1,100tn strategy and CXMT as a conventional-DRAM oversupply route. The new plans/share estimates broaden the scenario; no reviewer supplies a qualified-capacity/yield model establishing a glut date or proving CXMT will set marginal prices. XRHK6
  • New-figure qualifications: Claude describes CNY29.5bn as reported IPO proceeds; the cited report instead gives total proceeds of CNY57.92bn and CNY29.5bn of named project allocations. It calls Kioxia fair value the auditor's key matter; the filing dates that matter to 2024, with none in the H1 2026 review. Claude flags divergent Korean/ADS drawdowns; matched September 9–October 16 windows show similar declines (31.5%/31.3%). Keep native-currency series and distinct peak dates. XCHK6YA
  • HBM4 price leads: Claude flags unverified Korean-press/aggregator reports of a large 2027 HBM4 price step and near-final customer deals. Codex did not establish primary confirmation. No numerical contract price is adopted; seek a company disclosure or executed terms before adding it to claims. XR
  • Backlog date trap: claim 8 compares year-end RPO with a later call update. No reconciliation was verified. RPO excludes certain variable-price arrangements and is not all expected sales. MK
  • Unverified scope: current HBM revenue and total-revenue mix for Micron and Samsung; company-confirmed SK hynix HBM dollars; a universal industry sellout through 2027; Nvidia's supplier-specific prices and cancellation rights; precise Samsung fab output dates; numerical 2027 capex budgets for both Korean vendors. Original contracts, segment disclosures and qualified-output data would resolve these gaps.
